A NOTE ON GEMATRIA AND PATTERN, with references
Hebrew and Greek letters each carry numeric values. The original readers of Scripture would have seen numeric patterns embedded in the text that do not always translate into English. Key examples:
YHWH (יהוה) = 10 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 26 = 2 × 13; God encompassing and overcoming rebellion.
Yeshua (ישוע) = 10 + 300 + 6 + 70 = 386; in Greek, Iesous (Ἰησοῦς) = 888 — 8 tripled, new beginning in its fullness.
David (דוד) = 4 + 6 + 4 = 14 — the king of double blessing.
Nachash / Serpent (נחש) = 50 + 8 + 300 = 358 = same value as Mashiach (מָשִׁיחַ) = 40 + 300 + 10 + 8 = 358 — the Messiah came to do precisely what the serpent did, take the stolen authority from the serpent, in order to undo it.
Additional commentary on the serpent
This should give a clearer perspective on how the serpent stole authority.
Note that the serpent didn’t have real authority, and still doesn’t. He is a toothless lion in the field, waiting to scare though before him, that he may pounce on them, and devour them. But all that this means is that from the fall in Eden, our separation from God made us vulnerable. With Yeshua, the adversary was cast out of heaven and fell to earth. His influence on your life is what you granted him.
The serpent had no real authority — he had to ask permission
Job 1:6–12 — Satan presents himself before God and must request permission to touch Job. He operates within the limits God sets, not by his own power.
Job 2:1–6 — A second time he must ask. God draws the boundary: “he is in your hand, but spare his life.” His reach is leashed.
Luke 22:31 — “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat.” He demanded — he did not simply act.
John 14:30 — Yeshua says of the adversary: “he has nothing in Me” — the authority structure is exposed. He has nothing where there is no sin.
He is a roaring lion — but his roar is the weapon, not his bite
I Peter 5:8 — “Your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” Note: whom he may — not whom he will. The devouring is conditional.
Colossians 2:15 — “Having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them through the cross.” Disarmed. The teeth are gone.
Hebrews 2:14 — “That through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil.” The Greek katargeō — to render inoperative, to nullify.
James 4:7 — “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” A toothless lion still runs when confronted.
The fall in Eden — separation made us vulnerable
Genesis 3:23–24 — Man driven out from the Garden, from the presence of God. The separation is the wound.
Isaiah 59:2 — “Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God.” The mechanism stated plainly.
Romans 5:12 — “Through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all mankind.”
Ephesians 2:1–3 — “You were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the prince of the power of the air.” Separation from God left mankind in the adversary’s atmosphere.
With Yeshua, the adversary was cast from heaven
Luke 10:18 — “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning” — spoken by Yeshua as the seventy returned in His authority.
John 12:31 — “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.” Said in anticipation of the cross.
Revelation 12:7–10 — “Michael and his angels waged war with the dragon… the great dragon was thrown down… he was thrown down to the earth.” The victory of the cross executed in the heavenly realm. Verse 10: “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come.”
Revelation 12:12 — “He has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.” His presence on earth is not triumph — it is exile and countdown.
His influence on your life is only what you grant him
Ephesians 4:27 — “Do not give the devil an opportunity” (topos — a place, a foothold). A foothold is given, not taken.
James 4:7 — “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Both halves matter — submission to God is what makes resistance effective.
II Corinthians 2:10–11 — “So that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.” Ignorance is the open door.
I Peter 5:9 — “Resist him, firm in your faith.” Faith is the mechanism of resistance.
Romans 6:16 — “Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey?” Obedience — to God or to the flesh — determines whose authority you stand under.
Ephesians 6:11 — “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” The armor is something you put on — it requires your participation.
“Great are the works of the LORD; they are studied by all who delight in them.” — Psalm 111:2
